News You Can Use - August, 2001
We stopped dead in our tracks when we saw the bold
headline
on a local newspaper. Getting attention remains the first step in
marketing anything today, and that headline got ours. Read this
month's issue of "News You Can Use!" for the amazing details...
* My latest book, "Spiritual Marketing,"
has been climbing the charts
at amazon. One day it was ranked at 25,000 in sales. The next it was
at
9,500. Then it went to 4,350. While the hardcover version sits around
the 800,000 sales rank setting---meaning it isn't moving---the paperback
version continues to rock and roll. What's amazing is that I'm not
doing
anything to promote it!
That's not entirely true, of course. For anything
to sell, there has to
be some form of marketing, even if it's word-of-mouth. I did send
out an
email or two to my list of friends and peers (meaning you). My best
guess
is that you are buying the book, buying copies for others, and urging
others
to buy it, as well.
Whatever the case, I'm pleased. This is almost "no
effort" marketing.
But in reality it is the result of something that I talk about in
the book
itself. Spiritual marketing is being so in alignment with your intention
that your product is a magnet that pulls the right people to it.
Apparently "Spiritual Marketing" is such
a magnet.

for my newest book. Just do a search on the title or my name.
* I must be starting a trend. I've seen at least
three emailed sales
letters so far that were direct copies of one of my own sales letters
that began, "I'm nearly in tears..." Most of the time directly
copying
any writing won't work, because it neglects what is unique about
your product or service (besides being illegal). There's nothing
wrong with being inspired by good writing, though. That's why
ad writers are often called "copywriters": We copy. To see
the
sales letter by me that is "inspiring" some folks to plagiarize
me,

* Nerissa had just bought me dinner at a local restaurant
here
in the Hill Country, near our home outside of Wimberley, Texas. If
that
weren't unusual enough, as we were walking out the door we noticed
a
pile of newspapers on a rack. The headline grabbed us both. It read:
"UFO Lands in Wimberley!"
Nerissa grabbed a copy. So did I. We started reading
the paper
even as we walked to my car. She read it as I drove home. And once
we were
in our garage, we sat in the car and both read it. We both said, "I'm
advertising in THIS paper!"
Why? Because that paper knows how to get attention.
Turns out the
entire newspaper is a National Lampoon/National Enquirer type. Their
website
describes the paper this way: "The Sir Lance A lot's Herald is
a 24 page,
underground, humorous newspaper in the small town of Wimberley, Texas."
It's
written by local Wimberley teens. This boys are in tune. Their juices
are
flowing and their imaginations are free. Their ads aren't, though,
so I predict they will be wealthy in a few years.
Anyway, how can you get attention for your product
or service? Think
like teenagers with no rules in mind, and maybe pretend aliens are
about to
land next door....or maybe they did years ago and it hasn't dawned
on you
yet. Hmmmm. How would you get attention if you were an alien?

* Finally, I need a favor. I'm creating new business
cards and seeking
a word or phrase to sum up what I do. Since I do so much---from online
publicity, copywriting, consulting, authoring books to speaking, magic,
mentoring and more---I'm not sure what to say. I'm open to anything,
even a foreign word or phrase, and I'll reward anyone who helps me
by giving them a surprise gift. Send your ideas to ideas@mrfire.com
