News You Can Use - December, 2001
Rage. Betrayal. Confusion. When I learned that my
best female friend
was manipulated and then molested by my best male friend, my world
collapsed. I didn't sleep. My eyes watered nonstop. Anger welled up
in me. It was Sept. 11th all over again. Somehow I've still managed
to put together this month's holiday issue of "News You Can Use"...
Ever since Sept. 11th I've noticed that people are
more prone to irritability, more quick to anger, and
more easily depressed for the slightest of reasons.
I've been subject to this fall-out, too. I encourage us
to look for the rainbows in each day and to stay as

* What you do doesn't just affect your immediate
breathing area.
You send ripples out into the world. Your actions touch others.
Sometimes this is obvious. When you smile at a clerk in the store,
that smile may get you one in return. But what you don't usually see
is
how your smile led to that smile which led to other smiles that day.
You created a chain of smiles.
But the same thing happens when you do something
harmful. When
you frown, you may cause frowns to get passed around. When someone
is rude to you, you may be tempted to be rude to the next person you
meet...who in return may be tempted to be rude to the next person
he
or she meets...and so it goes. That's a chain of pain.
Do you see how this works?
When my best male friend (a therapist!) psychologically
manipulated
and then sexually molested my female friend (his client!), he unknowingly
traumatized her. She went into denial at first. But you can't bury
feelings. Within two weeks the terrible reality of what happened hit
her.
It wasn't pretty.
She called the suicide hot line. Then the rape crisis
center. She
went to her doctor and was prescribed Prozac. She also missed weeks
of work, and has struggled with confusion, betrayal, and shame. Daily
she fights suicidal urges. She cries herself to sleep every night.
She has
to take medication to get any sleep at all. She lost her best friend,
who
wouldn't support her during her time of crisis. She also now has to
go to
discreet support group meetings with other victims in order to get
her
life back together again.
But that's not all.
My male "friend" created a black cloud
that has been passed from my
female friend to me to the few others who know of this sad crime.
Feelings
of rage. Betrayal. It's hard to explain how deep it all goes. The
hurt is
now a scar.
But we still have a choice.
We can curl up and die, or we can move on.
We can choose to live.
P.T. Barnum, maybe an unlikely man for so wise a
comment, once said,
"We cannot all see alike, but we can all do good."
So true.
Please, for my sake, your sake, and for the sake
of all those we
touch in invisible ways, do good. As I mentioned in last month's
newsletter, and even way back in 1997 in my book "CyberWriting,"
I want to create a "chain of love" in the world.

scared and confused, and many businesses rocking in uncertainty, now
is probably the greatest time of need---and opportunity.
