News You Can Use - February, 2001
If you liked my best-selling e-book, "Hypnotic
Writing," then
you will LOVE the following news! And if you liked the movie
"The Matrix," you'll also love what else I'm about to tell
you. This
month's e-newsletter by Joe Vitale begins with a story that inspired
business people nationwide last year. And here it is ---
* Most press releases never make it.
Those that do rarely amount to much.
A new publicity strategy uses direct marketing techniques
to greatly
increase your web site's profitability.
For example, cyber-publicist Joe Vitale used this
strategy to help
client Jeff DeLong with his website.
DeLong did more than 25 radio talk shows two weeks
after Vitale's news
release hit the media. He then made the Associated Press, which sent
the
story nationwide. The news was covered by CNN, 48 Hours, and Internet
Tonight. DeLong's web sales jumped from $2,000 a week to $30,000 a
week.
Then Hallmark bought the rights to his line of cards for a six-figure
amount.
How did a single press release create this success
story? It was a news
release based on Vitale's new formula for getting publicity. He calls
it.
"E-DR Publicity." It means Electronic-Direct Response Publicity.
Here's how it works:
1. Create a USP. In direct marketing a USP
means "unique selling proposition."
In E-DR Publicity a USP means "unique story proposition."
Vitale explains three proven ways to generate a unique
story in his
Nightingale-Conant audioprogram, "The Power of Outrageous Marketing."
He says you must have news, invent news, or tie your business
to news in order to grab media attention.
* Having news could mean announcing a new product
or service. It's what
most news releases contain---if they're lucky. They're often boring.
* Creating news might be sponsoring an event, having
an employee break
a record, or somehow Barnum-izing your business. "You have to
be a little
creative and a little outrageous to get media attention," says
Vitale, who
wrote the only book on the business secrets of P.T. Barnum in "There's
A
Customer Born Every Minute."
* Tying your business to news is part of what Vitale
did for DeLong:
They sent the news release out (about ending relationships) near Valentine's
Day. "Few web businesses make use of this tactic," says
Vitale.
2. Offer a freebie. Visit www.c-ya.com to
see how DeLong offers free
virtual cards. This gives the media an excuse to run his story. It
also
gives people a reason to visit his web site.
"Editors want to serve their readers, not you,"
explains Vitale. You can
offer a free report, free gift, free product or service, or sample.
"Offering something free of value to your prospects
is how you create a
direct response news release," says Vitale. Putting that freebie
on your
web site is how you drive a stampede there.
3. Distribute with precision. Don't send news about
your fertilizer to
a children's magazine. This may seem obvious, but too many people
blitz the
media. That's a waste of gunpowder. Take aim. Go to news bureau web
sites
such as www.imediafax.com and hand select the media you want to feed
your
news to. The better you aim, the better your results.

* I don't think I've ever recommended two books by
the same author before
in this newsletter, but this month I have to break tradition and do
that.
Michael Hall, author of the "Dragon Slaying" book I reviewed
last month,
has not one but two more new books out. They are--
"Secrets of Personal Mastery" and "Frame
Games." I don't know which
I like better. The first describes advanced techniques for assessing
your
higher, or "Executive level" mind. The second reveals how
your "frames," or
choices of perception, create the world you experience.
"A very simple philosophy governs 'frame games.'
To understand it,
we only need to realize that we can take charge of our lives by 'rising
up,'
in our minds, to 'think' about our 'thinking,'" so writes Michael
Hall in
"Frame Games: Persuasion Elegance."
If you liked the movie "The Matrix," you
should like these books. They
offer you the 'red pill' so you can wake up and transcend the matrix
of your
life. Great stuff! Both are stimulating, liberating, and fascinating.

* Just a reminder: I'll be in Atlanta February 24
and 25 speaking about
"Spiritual Marketing." Get details at http://www.insight2000.com/seminar/.
* Here's an interesting concept: Learn GOOD marketing
by looking
at BAD marketing. See Craig Valine's site at http://awfulmarketing.com
* On a personal note, Marian and I were divorced
on January 10th, 2001,
after 21 years of marriage. We remain best friends and totally love
each
other. Life is change, and this one is good. There is no animosity.
We've
simply decided to go down different roads. Let this be an example
that
even divorce, well known for being a war zone, can be peaceful and
loving.
