"News You Can Use", May '01

Brace yourself! This month I'll describe two long lost books
that are back in print which I think you should drop everything
and get TODAY. And if you get tired of reading, I'll tell you how
to make your computer read books TO you. It all begins right

Here's how it works: Read the headline news, online or off. Or

Now let your mind wander---creativity plays a major role in getting
publicity---and see if you can tie your product or service to what
is happening in the news right now.

Obvious answers are to have a sale if today is a holiday or
some other special occasion. Less obvious answers are to
find ways to comment on the news, or even solve whatever
the news story is all about (it's virtually always a problem).
One of my clients has a book on fear. When the news says
a student just shot another student, my client can send out
a news release commenting on why fear made the student
pull the trigger.

I also have a client who is a therapist, specializing in brain
disorders. He can take the very same news story, comment
on it, and suddenly make himself newsworthy.

Yet another person I know is a woman who has a unique
way of training dogs. She can comment on how dogs respond
to fear, or even how the fear in people affect their pets. In short,
she can use the very same news story to spin herself into the news.
You can do this, too. Pay attention to the major morning news
and see how you can tie you or your business to what is happening.
In this way, you can piggy-back on the hot stories of the day and
create some news of your own---which the media will love you for.
