News You Can Use - November, 2001

Recession? We're in a recession? You couldn't tell it from
our trip to Vegas. The airports were packed, flights were full,
Vegas shows were sold out, traffic was clogged, and the
marketing seminar was jammed with eager beavers there to
drain the brains of the two gurus on stage. Recession? HA!
Welcome to this month's "News You Can Use!"

This monthly newsletter is growing by leaps and bounds,
mainly because people like you are so wonderful in
passing the word about it. My intention is to triple the
size of my subscribers by the end of this year. To do that,
I need your help. Would you take one moment and either
forward this newsletter to five friends of yours, or urge
at least five friends to go to www.mrfire.com and sign-up
for it there? If you find value in these newsletters of mine,
please tell others. As a gift to you, you can still read the
e-book version of "Spiritual Marketing" online--free--here:
http://www.mrfire.com/spirit/index.html

Thank you.

- Joe

* Whenever someone does something nice for me, I thank
them. It may sound trivial or obvious, but not enough people
do it. Yet the pay-offs can be fantastic.

For example, every time I see a new review of my "Spiritual
Marketing" book over at amazon, I dash off a quick email to
the reviewer, thanking them for taking the time to share their
thoughts. I never expect a reply. I do it because I want to pass
love around the world, and to show my gratitude. The thing is,
you never know what can happen from such a simple gesture.
One day I wrote a man who had reviewed my book. He wrote
me back, thanking me, and offered to translate my book into
Spanish. He also asked if he could publish my book and take
only one dollar a book as payment.

I went one step further and offered him complete rights to the
Hispanic market. I told him if he wanted to publish, promote, and
distribute the e-version as well as the published version, he could
do so for not one dollar a book, but for fifty percent of all proceeds.
He immediately agreed.

Now note: All this came about because I took one minute to say
"thank you" to a stranger!

What are you missing by forgetting to say thank you? I urge you
to create a "chain of love" in the world by saying thank you more
often. It's good for the soul, good for the world, and will be good
for your business, as well.

BTW, "Spiritual Marketing" has already been translated into
Italian AND Portuguese and will soon be translated into Korean
and then into Slovene!

You can order "Spiritual Marketing" (in English) in softcover or
hardcover at http://www.amazon.com There are now 41 reviews of it
at amazon---40 of them are FIVE STARS!! None of my other books
have ever been so reviewed! Heck, my "AMA Complete Guide to
Small Business Advertising," written for The American Marketing
Association, has no reviews at all -- yet! :)

* And some people are now using my latest book (with my permission)
as a text for their own work. For example, "Make Your Own Miracles" is a
transformational, five session tele-class based upon "Spiritual Marketing."
Under the guidance of your own personal coach, you'll learn and apply the
miracle making formula in my book to your own life. Cool, huh? It will be
hosted by Michael D. Pollock, Personal Coach. For free details, go here:
http://www.michaeldpollock.com/MYOM.htm

* Robert Collier changed my life as a writer. Before I read his now
legendary "Robert Collier Letter Book," I was a so-so writer. After it,
I was a hypnotic writer. The news of the day is that you can now read
15 letters, with commentary, all by Collier and all for free, online at
http://website.lineone.net/~cornerstone/framepage.htm
(Note: Scan the list of authors on that page until you find Robert Collier.
Click on his name. Then, at the bottom of his bio, click on his letters.)

* E-MAIL TIP: The subject line of your email is the headline for your
message. But don't put traditionally used advertising words such as
"FREE" in that space. More people today (including me) are starting
to use filters that automatically delete messages that contain key words
that signal an ad. Also stay away from "CASH" or "SEX" or anything
that may trigger a filter to judge your message as junk email or spam.

* TRIVIA: From the close of the Civil War until 1900, the most popular
form of literature in America was the dime novel, which actually sold for a
nickel. During those few decades, 1,000,000,000 copies were sold.
Who said people were illiterate then?

* NEWS RELEASE TIP: Adding statistics to your news will make your
release more interesting. But where to you get statistics? Online, of
course. They are all free here: http://www.statistics.com/

* Want publicity? "How to Be a Kick Butt Publicity Hound" by Joan
Stewart and Tom Antion may be the best e-book I've ever seen for
clever ways to break into the news. It's a hefty 300-pages and packed
with check-lists, insights, trigger questions, interviews, and more. See
details at http://www.antion.com/t.cgi/175318/publicityhound.htm
(Note: Poke around at the site and you'll also find fantastic products
on speaking, selling, marketing, and lots more. Way cool stuff.)

* Confession time: Last June I mentioned in this monthly newsletter
that you could change your cursor to a fun new graphic by going to
http://cometcursor.cometsystems.com While I didn't know it at the
time, the "smart cursor" you end up with is actually Spy Ware.

Believe me, I'm just as shocked as you. Recently I had to have a
genuine computer nerd (from Computer Nerdz! in Austin) come
to my home. While looking at my computer he told me that my own
cursor was spying on me! Apparently the hidden program watches
where I go online, and then transmits that information back to marketing
companies, so they can better tailor their offers to my interests.

Is that good? I think the idea is good, but the practice is deceptive.
I am all for "Inventive Marketing" and all against "Deceptive Marketing."
Inventive Marketing is the idea of a fun cursor; Deceptive Marketing
is secretly programming my new cursor to spy on me. Had the smart
cursor people TOLD me that my cursor would be keeping track of
my travels online, I *might* approve of it. After all, I am a consumer and
I like to buy stuff relevant to my interests. I welcome targeted offers.
So, what's the moral for you?

First, if you loaded the smart cursor on your drive, you might want to
delete it. (I'm told it doesn't transmit *personal* information, but it does
keep track of where you go online, which might bother some folks.)
Second, examine your own marketing practices. Are you inventive
or deceptive? Creativity is cool; spying is not.

* "The Weekly Spin" features selected news summaries with links to
further information about current public relations campaigns. It's emailed
every Wednesday. It's a behind-the-scenes look at the media. To subscribe,
send an email to: weekly_spin-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

* My hero Bob Bly just came out with yet another book. This must
be number 50. It's "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Direct Marketing."
I'm astonished to see so many tips on writing copy, doubling responses,
and so much more. As usual, anything by Bob is worth gold. Get it at amazon,
at your favorite bookstore, or online at http://www.idiotsguides.com

* Good lord this new e-book is GREAT! Just take my word for it and sprint
over to read the description of Yanik Silver and Jim Edward's masterpiece,
"33 Days to Online Profits." I am now using this book to promote MY sites.
Details are at: http://www.7dayebook.com/33days.html

* A truly overwhelming source for over 250 web marketing links to free
online books, online discussions, free training courses, new marketing
products, affiliate directories, and MUCH more is at
http://www.internetmarketingindex.com

* Do you like movies? I recently went on an Errol Flynn kick and
was delighted to see many of his old movies---including a fun guest
appearance on Abbot & Costello's TV show (sponsored by Colgate)
---listed for sale at http://www.moviesunlimited.com I ordered several
videos and was astonished at their speedy delivery. And you thought
amazon.com was king of the hill!

* Forget the recession. Think positive. Think prosperity. To help
you do just that, join POSITIVE-CLUB. My dear friend Christian
Godefroy---brilliant copywriter and author of "How to Write Letters
That Sell"---put the site online at http://www.positive-club.com.
You'll find freebies, stories, entire books, and more, all designed
to help you think, act, and be positive. Great stuff!

* INSIGHT: Are we humans gullible? In 1749 two noble Englishmen
wanted to prove that people would pay to see the absurd. They ran
an ad that claimed a man would appear on stage in one week. Said
man would then jump into a common wine bottle. While inside, he would
sing. Did people respond to the ad? The public stormed the theater.
Hundreds stood outside. When nothing happened, they rioted, trashed
the theater, carried debris into the street and burned it all. Perhaps
we should only promise what we can truly deliver?

* ADVERTISING TIP: Want your name on a small billboard on a highway
near you? Most states now have "Adopt a Highway" programs. You adopt a
section of highway and volunteer to pick up trash on that highway. The state
puts up a sign saying "Adopt a Highway - Next 3 miles - (your name)". If
your target audience is driving on a highway near you, this may be great
visibility for you. The Adopt-A-Highway program is administered by the
Department of Transportation in each state. (Idea source: Trafficology.)

* You can still get my proven marketing course---"Recession-Proof
Marketing"---delivered to your email box every day for a week---for
FREE---by sending blank email to class@aweber.com

* Vegas was awesome. Meeting many "old friends" for the first time
was one of the best treats for me. Jay Conrad Levinson delivered
a non-stop barrage of marketing ideas, and Mark Joyner gave cool
insights into psychology. Meeting Joe Sugarman, Kenrick Cleveland,
Paul Lemberg, Mike Litman, Robert Allen, Charles Lewis, Raleigh
Pinskey---and a long list of other great names---was the best treat
for me. Seeing Lance Burton baffle people with his magic was also
an unforgettable evening. All in all, a wonderful trip. When Aesop
Marketing hosts another seminar, ask no questions. Just GO!

* There are several new articles at my main website. To wit:

Take a quick peek at http://Exultations.com

* Finally, Jay Conrad Levinson's latest book may be his best yet.
"Guerrilla Creativity" explains how to make your message irresistible
through the power of memes. Memes are simple phrases or symbols
that get stuck in your head and then passed around like persuasive
viruses of the mind. Except for the bright and blinding cover, (I put
sunglasses on to read it) this book is great. Get it at www.amazon.com,
www.houghtonmifflinbooks.com or http://www.jayconradlevinson.com

steel magnet. The power of attraction is not in the bar of steel
but in the invisible force with which it is charged." - Robert A. Russell
