* LESSON: J.C. Penney was an early Spiritual Marketer.
This man rose from nothing to create a chain of stores
originally called "The Golden Rule." He made a fortune,
and lost all of it -- $40,000,000 -- in the Great Depression
of 1929. But he also went on to become successful again,
though never controlling the renamed company he began.
He loved people, was deeply religious, and made the
people who ran his stores partners, not employees.
In 1913 his company mission statement was:
"To serve the public as nearly as we can to its complete
satisfaction.
a. To expect for the service we render a fair
remuneration, and not all the profit the traffic will bear.
b. To do all in our power to pack the customer's
dollar full of value, quality and satisfaction.
c. To continue to train ourselves and our associates
so that the service we give will be more and more
intelligently performed.
d. To improve constantly the human factor in our
business.
e. To reward men and women in our organization through
participation in what the business produces.
f. To test our every policy, method and act in this
wise: Does it square with what is right and just?"
J.C. Penney is worth study and modelling today. He
so cared about people that when the company was
considering whether to accept credit cards or not,
Penney said it would ultimately hurt the people, as it
would encourage over-spending. He was right, but
the old gentleman was the sole vote in a company
he no longer controlled. He was over-ruled.
He once said: "Give me a stock clerk with a goal
and I'll give you a man who will make history.
Give me a man with no goals and I'll give you
a stock clerk."
Obviously, J. C. Penney had a goal. It was to help
the world. In his 95 years, he did his best. His name
lives on today. He made history.
His middle name was Cash.

* GADGET: You know I love 007 gadgets. A friend told
me about a wrist watch that measures your sleep cycles
in order to determine the ultimate time for you to awaken.
I bought the watch, use it, and like it. The only snag is
the company does a terrible job of explaining *how*
the watch actually measures anything. They say, "Its
internal sensors can detect even the most subtle
physical signals from your body."
What internal sensors?
What kind of physical signals?
They would get more sales if they would treat prospects
like intelligent people and explain what the watch is doing,
what it is measuring, and how it determines your "optimal
wake up" time.

this "Reveal the business nobody knows."

* TIP: If you're seeking fame and fortune, or maybe
just your name in the local paper, then you should
read "It!" by Paula Froelich.
I'm a big believer in publicity, of course. As a disciple
of P.T. Barnum, I learned a long time ago that the
media will drive traffic to you if you know how to woo
them. The thing is, most people don't have a clue
how to work with the media.
Froelich's book reveals "9 secrets of the rich and
famous that will take you to the top." Her inside
stories about how publicists and publicity are
the real reasons behind the celebrities you drool
over are eye-opening.
She writes about Paris Hilton to magician David
Blaine. In every case, the celebrity has a little
talent that is blown out of proportion by a smart
publicist. From there, the media takes over and
our addiction to the cult of celebrity begins.
Again, this book reveals the behind the scenes
publicity machine at work today. I found it a
quick read, probably aimed at a very young chic
crowd, but with enough practical ammno to satisfy
anyone reading this newsletter.
