* One day last April someone on my email list wrote me a note saying they just sent me a virus. He advised me to find a certain file on my computer and delete it right now. He said as soon as I rebooted my computer the file would activate and the virus would begin to work.

I didn't know what to think. I didn't know the person. Was the virus for real? Was the person just trying to get me to delete an important file, which would then corrupt my system? I didn't know.

I sent a note to the person and asked if they were for real. They wrote back, saying yes, indeed. There's a "worm" that attaches itself to your email and sends itself to everyone on your email list. That's how he sent it to me. HE didn't do it. The virus did it. And he was urging me to find and delete the virus before it got activated and sent itself to everyone on my list---including YOU.

I found the file in question but couldn't delete it. So I downloaded an anti-virus program. It took two hours to download and it couldn't find the virus. I then went and downloaded the famous Norton program, which took an amazing EIGHT HOURS to download.

At two in the morning, after I had downloaded it, I tried to get my email. I couldn't. Norton had corrupted my Internet access. It actually changed my user name AND my password. I called my service provider and they said, "Yes, Norton does that." They helped me get everything straight again and I was able to retrieve my email. What a nightmare.

But then I tried to run Norton. It froze my computer. It shut me down and out and refused to do anything but sit there, staring at me. It's now three in the morning and I'm worn out from this computer fiasco. To think I downloaded a reputable anti-virus program only to watch it GIVE me a virus and then lock me out of my own computer. What was I do to? I now live in the country. Getting help isn't easy. Hauling machines into town is time-consuming. I can't even go online and search for the help I need because now I'm forbidden net access. What am I going to do?

I looked up and saw the local telephone book on my shelf. It had arrived the day before. I looked under computer repair and saw a giant ad that read, "24-hour MOBILE repair service." Mobile? You mean they come to me? I call them---it's 4 A.M. now, mind you ---and a live person, awaken and friendly, answers the phone.

By 2 PM the same day a young man from TD & G Computer Solutions is here, ready to help me. He looks over my computer and begins to repair it, acting as if he knew it so well he must have created it or written the code to operate it. The whole time he's talking to me about cars---he loves my BMW Z3---while typing and analyzing my computer. Within an hour I'm free. Yes! Yes! YESSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The lessons here? Everything from be sure to have an ad where your clients will see it when they need to see it, to being sure you are offering true service. It's one thing to have a computer repair company where people have to lug their stuff to you. It's quite another to run a business that *delivers* that service.

I'm happy, my computer is running, and you didn't get a virus from me. On top of that, I hope you were reminded of a business truth: Give people what they need when they need it and they will joyously pay you for the service. Give them MORE than what they expect and you can get rich from their gratitude.
