What was the result of last month's survey? Hands down the vote for the next book I should write was "How to Magnetize Yourself to Attract Money." A close second was "Publicity Secrets." Until I write those books, both of those subjects are covered in my new e-book -- "Hypnotic Marketing" -- due out any day now. I'll send you an email when it's available. You'll love it!

* Terri Levine's book, "Work Yourself Happy," became an official amazon.com best-seller on Friday, February 22. She sold around 600 books in less than 12 hours---all online.

How? By simply following the strategy Mike Litman created to make HIS book a #1 best-seller at amazon in January.

In short: Terri created a compelling reason to go buy her book. Like Mike, she gathered about $700 in e-information. Then she issued a letter to her email list saying if you buy just one copy of her book at amazon on 2-22-02, she would give you the e-books for free. I sent the same type of letter to everyone on my email list, too. You probably got it.

Obviously, this simple strategy worked once again.

The lessons here? There are several --

1. Find what works and duplicate it.
2. Overwhelm your customers with so many gifts they can't refuse your main offer.
3. Ask your friends--your email list, if you have one--- to help you achieve your goal.

* What about the ethics of marketing?

After Terri's book reached #3 at amazon, a handful of coaches wrote to her and said they objected to our approach to making her book an amazon best-seller. They felt it was "stuffing the ballot box."

I found that fascinating. While I can see where they are coming from---I was once in that mindset myself---I have come to a few more beneficial conclusions:

For one thing, Terri didn't buy copies of her own book, as many authors have done to promote their books. For example, Wayne Dyer began his career as a best-selling author by buying the entire first printing of his book from his publisher.

Instead, Terri and I sweetened the deal so people would *want* to buy her book, which is just good business. Adding incentives is a proven marketing technique to increase sales, no matter what you are selling

For another thing, every product needs marketing. Even word of mouth marketing won't kick in unless *some* form of marketing starts the fire. When it comes to books, more than 1,000 are published every single week and most of them die within six weeks without any public exposure. (!) Clever marketing can keep those books alive.

Finally, whenever you step in the direction of your dreams, you will find people jealous of your success. At least one of the coaches who complained to Terri about "stuffing the ballot box" admitted that when HIS book came out, he would practice "anything goes" marketing to sell it.

Why? Because he believes in his book. He believes he has a message of value to people.

Well, Terri believes in her book, too.

Mike Litman believes in his.

And I believe in my books.

When you have something that will benefit the world, don't hold back in finding ways to tell them. And don't worry about the occasional complaint about your success.

For every two people who complain, there will be 2,000 who admire you but say nothing.

Don't let the nay-sayers destroy your dreams, or deprive the world of your offerings.

* You can learn a lot about marketing from homeless cats.

Last month Nerissa and I took two cats she had saved to a pet adoption day at a pet food store in Austin. It was quite a learning experience. The animal rescue team put up two tables near the front of the store. They then sat their cat cages and their cats on those tables. We did the same, not knowing any better.

What happened surprised me.

*Nothing* happened.

People walked in, looked at the cats in and out of their cages, and smiled. They said things like, "Cute!" and "I wonder what this is all about?"

And they walked off.

It became clear that the animal rescue league, and even Nerissa and I, needed something virtually every person in business needs:

A SIGN.

There needed to be a sign on or above those tables saying "Get your cats here!" or some such statement.

There needed to be signs on the cat cages saying "Meet Nona," or "Hi, I'm Chelsea, and I love you!" or "Hi, my name is Regal and I love to watch BayWatch."

Without signs, the public is confused. Without names on the cages, there isn't any personality.

Bad marketing, that.

Nerissa saw the same thing going on that I did. Since she's now in business making unique pet images (at http://www.FreeVideoCoding.com) she decided to have a sign made for the rescue league, print her website address at the bottom of it, and donate it to the group.

Very smart woman.

She also decided to take pictures of all the kitties up for adoption and made a website with their faces and descriptions.

While no cats were adopted the day we were at the event, as a result of Nerissa's website, three cats were adopted immediately after it.

And the rescue team now has a sign for future adoption days.

A sign that also happens to promote Nerissa's website.

And that sign helped two cats get adopted on the next pet adoption day.

Also, by volunteering a web page, Nerissa gets her web address printed in the newspaper every week when the rescue league runs their ad announcing the next pet adoption day.

The message for you?

Be sure your audience knows what you are in the business of doing. You may be assuming that they can look at you and somehow figure it out. But you might be like the cats on display at the pet store: People think you're cute but no one knows you're available.

Tell 'em.
