LESSON: How can you easily double your

website sales?

Just take off the banner at the top of your website.

I've often wondered why we put banners on websites, anyway. They usually contain nothing but an image and/or a logo. They don't seem to sell. They look pretty, yes, but if your goal is to sell, why create a banner at all? I always suspected that the banner distracts from the headline on the site, which is what really does the engaging.

But I never tested my theory. Then one day I had lunch with my dear friend Bill Hibbler. He told me how John Reese, another friend and a sharp marketing mind, tested sites with and without banners. He found that sites without banners got twice as many sales as those with banners.

Bill then tested one of his own sites. Almost immediately his conversion *doubled* on the site without a banner on top.

This is revolutionary information. While most people believe they need a banner on their site, the realty may be that banners don't help sales at all.

I urge you to test this idea. Take your existing website and take the banner off the top. Just let your headline be the first thing people see. Then see how your sales look.

LESSON: Change the last number of your price to a 9 and you'll increase your sales.

According to a September '03 article in the Harvard Business Review, changing the last number of your price to a 9 signals to people that this is "a deal" and it's "for real."

Good copywriters have known this for centuries, of course. That's why most products sell for $19.99 and not $10. Those nines bring home the bacon.

So, a word to the wise: Whatever you are selling change the last figure to a 9.

INSIGHT: Best book I read last month was on

how stories are so much a part of how we share, think, and communicate. For example:

"We do not easily remember what other people have said if they do not tell it in the form of a story. We can learn from the stories of others, but only if what we hear relates strongly to something we already knew." * Personal note: I turn 50 at the end of the month (29th). How did that happen? I was 25 all the way up to this month, and now I'm fifty? Time not only flies, it warps and transports, too.
