INSPIRING: Amy Janota came to see me a few months ago. She wanted to meet me, had questions about making money online, lived near by, and seemed sincere. I agreed. We met and had a great visit.

After she left, we stayed in touch. Because she wanted to know how to make money online, I urged her to find a topic she loved and to write an e-book about it.

LESSON: On my flight from LA to Austin, after attending Mark Joyner's fantastic Free Agent Path double party, I had a remarkable insight.

I was browsing a copy of "Dupont Registry of Luxury Cars" when I saw a new type of ad that looked truly hypnotic. The ad was for an adult product for men. I neither need or want it, but what caught my eye was the layout for it.

It looked like an advice column you might find in any newspaper or magazine. The "letter" to the columnist was in italics and stated a problem. The answer was in regular type and revealed a product that solved the problem. The result was a captivating ad.

While this ad format is a cousin to the famous "advertorial" style --- where an ad looks like a magazine article --- this "ad-vice" format works very well, too.

The next time you want to run an ad, or need to design a website, consider making it look like an advice column.

Use the question area to explain the problem your readers are having. Use the advice area to recommend your product or service. You may capture a whole new world of readers and buyers with this approach.

For the record, I later saw the same ad in "Rolling Stone" and "Muscle and Fitness" magazines. As a rule of thumb, the more you see the same ad, the more it is working.

Take my advice and try the ad-vice format. :)

BEST BOOK OF THE MONTH: Grab a copy of "Body of Truth: Leveraging What Consumers Can't or Won't Say" by Dr. Dan Hill. It's probably the most stimulating marketing book I've read in months.

The current trend online is to take a survey to find out what prospects want and then create a product that answers their need.

The problem is, most people don't know what they want or need. They'll tell you one thing on a survey, but when you actually give them what they say they wanted, they don't buy it.

Why not?

Because their needs are usually below their own conscious awareness.

That's why you need "Body of Truth."

Hill's book is all about mapping the unconscious. As you know from all my hypnotic-this and hypnotic-that line of e-books, I am a firm believer that you have to speak to the unconscious in a person to get them into a buying trance. Hill agrees, and extends that thought to say we need to engage a person's entire body, not just their conscious mind, to sell them.

For example, when it comes to how to price your product or service, he writes:

"Price is not in any psychological list of basic human needs. Worth is, but that's a translation that gains its power and relevance once we've actually experienced the offer. Not surprisingly, price lacks in either sensory or emotive linkage."

In short, when it comes to pricing, focus on communicating the value of your product or service in a memorable way, and price will never be an issue.

"Body of Truth" is rich, provocative reading. I don't know the author (yet) but I sure admire his book.

TIP: Speaking of good books, be sure to read "The Power of Persuasion," a hypnotic work by psychologist Robert Levine. It's being hailed as the successor to Cialdini's classic work on influence.

Levine studied everyone from magicians to con artists to discover how they so easily manipulate us. And don't think you don't need his book. His first chapter is titled, "The Illusion of Invulnerability."

Read this one to better protect yourself, as well as to better understand the process of persuasion and influence.

Along the same lines, but more detailed and scholarly, is "The Psychology of Judgment and Decision Making" by Scott Plous.

Read it to understand the black holes in your own mind.
