LESSON: Dust off an old idea to make it new.

When I was growing up we often went to drive-in movies. We packed up the car, drove to the theater, paid the tickets, rolled the window part way down and stuck a heavy metal speaker on it, and sat back. I saw Sean Connery as 007 there, probably for the first time. But drive-in theatres closed many decades ago. They are old news.

But some people are dusting them off.

Here in Wimberley there is an outdoor theater. You don't drive inside to it, but you can walk in, sit on benches under the stars, and watch a movie shown on an old wooden wall. Cows are walking around on the other side of it. It's pretty cool (at least on cool nights).

In San Antonio you can sit on an inflated tire tube in the water and watch a movie shown on a screen on land. You don't drive there, but you can bob there.

In Hollywood some 1,500 people go and watch old movies projected on a marble mausoleum wall in a cemetery.

All of these are drive-in concepts. It's an old idea put in a new dress.

Here's another example:

When I was a teenager, I bought a mail-order exercise device called a Bullworker. I still have it. It's now over 30 years old. The company stopped selling it decades ago because they didn't charge enough for it to make any money.

Well, I was thumbing through a catalog the other day and there's a "new" device called a PowerPumper. It looks virtually identical to the Bullworker. Someone found it, dusted it off, and brought it to life again.

Here's another example:

On the plane to Boston to attend the world's largest convention on hypnosis, I read a wonderful old book called "The Conquest of Poverty." It was published in 1899 by Helen Wilmans.

The book is old news---long lost and out of print.

What might I do with it?

At least two things:

1. I could publish it myself, much as I did "Attaining Your Desires" by Behrend. Since Helen's book came out before 1900, it's in the public domain.

2. I could write a book like hers, based on her basic idea, but make it my own spin on her subject.

Again, all I would be doing is dusting off an old idea.

INSIGHT: "Serif fonts (like Times Roman) are preferred for written materials in the "real world", as they are easier to read. Sans-serif fonts like Arial are preferred for web copy, as they are easier to read online (don't ask me why). Verdana is a font that was designed especially for the web." Spamarrest is a way to allegedly protect yourself from receiving any email but those Spamarrest allows to get to you.

The thing is, it also blocks newsletters which you may have subscribed to, email from friends who use a different email account from time to time, and email from strangers who don't know how to use Spamarrest.

And to add further complication, Spamarrest has at least once collected emails and then spammed those emails about their "no spam" service.

A word to the wise.
