LESSON: What can the movie "SeaBiscuit" teach you about life and marketing?

A lot. Nerissa and I watched the movie and agreed it is a masterpiece.

For one thing, thoughts are conveyed rather than expressed. This is a very powerful means of communication. As my friend Blair Warren says, people never argue with what they conclude.

For another, it shows the heart is stronger than any "limit." If you are looking at your life and complaining about what you have, you are missing the element that can make you a star. It isn't your limits that matter, it's your passion.

For another, it shows how good marketing is just sharing. When you find something you truly believe in, share it. That's not marketing, that's love. The movie radiates that feeling.

Nerissa said Charles Howard, the owner of SeaBiscuit and a natural promoter, was adept at practicing TIISG -- the art of Turn It Into Something Good. Read the article.

You'll need to watch the movie to appreciate all the lessons in it, but it IS a masterpiece. Go see it.

REMEMBER AMY? I wrote about her in my Nov. newsletter. She came to visit me, had no idea how to make money online, and two months later released her first e-book. It was on how to play the guitar in one weekend flat. You remember, right?

Well, two weeks after releasing her e-book, she sold it for $10,000. Is that cool or what? One of her affiliates liked the book and offered her ten grand for the rights to it. Amy accepted. I'm amazed. So is she. When she first came to me, she didn't believe she could make money online. Now she's yet another Internet success story.

Don't you love this? I do. So does Amy. She's now working on her next project.

LESSON: Bill Harris flew 7 hours in his own plane to spend 7 hours visiting with me about marketing, copywriting, and spirituality. We talked well into the night. What a fascinating man.

Bill started his meditation tape business in his house. Today it is an eight million dollar a year business and growing by leaps and bounds.

Talk about spiritual marketing. Bill knows marketing --- the ins and outs of copywriting --- but he also knows you create your own reality. You get more of what you focus on.

He has read "Think and Grow Rich" 43 times. Think of it. If he can read it 43 times and always find something new in it, shouldn't you read it at least once? (I'm re-reading it now, too.)

As Bill told me, "The book revealed the magic wand in my mind."

LESSON: What can you learn from watching the hit TV show "24"?

I haven't seen a television series as riveting as "24." I've watched every season of it and find it, well, hypnotic.

Part of the reason the show draws me in is due to the writers masterful ability to create stories that don't end, at least not completely.

I think we copywriters and marketers can learn from this show. For one thing, stories sell. Stories are how we think, speak, and remember. Weave stories into your sales letters and web copy and you'll hold attention.

But also think about teasing people with stories that don't end. There is an art to this. You could easily lose readers if you don't do this well. But look at how I begin each of these monthly newsletters.

Right at the top are a series of questions. Those openers are teasers. They are beginnings of stories that you can't resolve unless you read the whole newsletter. Tricky, eh?

"24" does this on TV. They tease you with the promise of conflict. But they don't resolve it. You have to watch the show for resolution. And even then they stretch it out to keep you watching.

Your evening news does this, too. Watch the commercials before the news begins. The announcer will say, "Woman saves cat and discovers her long lost son in a tree," or some such. They are hooking you. They are teasing you. They are engaging you. They are counting on the fact that you will want to hear the whole story, and will tune in to get it.

Learn from "24" and your local news.

Tease and grow rich.

TIP: Forget customers. There's no such thing as customer loyalty, anyway. And if you think the customer is always right, you're wrong. Wake up.

For proof, and for the best marketing wisdom I've come across in the most unusual book of last year, read "Free Gift Inside" by Stephen Brown.

Brown's book has a style all its own. While good writers today sound like other good writers, Brown is a great writer who sounds and is unique. Some say he is the antichrist of marketing.

His insights, historical references, case studies, and remarkable ability to keep you reading through his own brand of literary electricity is priceless. All I have to say is get this book.

LESSON: Quit trying to be so neat.

My friend John Du Cane of Dragon Door Publications sent out one of the hardest to read postcards I've ever seen. One side was tiny handwriting. The other side was text so small only a fly could read it. I sure couldn't.

Yet the thing is, John's messy postcard caused him to have twice as many sales as anything else he's EVER done.

TWICE as many sales!

And John *intentionally* made his postcard messy. He told me he kept arguing with his graphics person, who kept wanting to clean up the look of the card.

Direct marketing experts know that a sales letter with crossed out words, handwritten marks, notes in the margin, and so forth, actually increases sales. It seems people who have to work for the message will also pay for the product.

I struggled to read John's postcard, then gave up and went to his website. Once there, I ordered the book. (Called "The Naked Warrior.")
