CASE STUDY: A fellow subscriber to this newsletter asked me to take a look at his site, which he put up for his wife, at http://www.vintagepotions.com While I normally charge to review sites, I thought I'd make him this month's lucky winner for a freee critique. So here we go:

1. The home page is simple and direct. But that's not enough. I'd love to see more hypnotic copy.

Tell us what the products do for us. Remember, people care about themselves, not you. Add some juicy tips, trivia, or other info on the home page to make us WANT to learn more and, ultimately, buy more.

2. I don't see any explanation of how the products are made. I'm guessing they are home-made. How? In my book, "The Seven Lost Secrets of Success," I explain that people are interested in the 'how' of things. Tell us your story. The wife runs the business and the hubby creates the site. But who are they?

How do they operate? People are interested in people.

3. I'd like to see the site more interactive.

Maybe add a quiz, or a questionnaire. I should be able to type in what I am interested in and have the site then take me right to the product.

For example, since I am working on curing my asthma, if I typed in "breathing issue," the site might then suggest products that would help with that issue. I, as a customer, would love it. And I'd buy, too.

4. I clicked on "Herbal Eye Pillow" and was disappointed to not find a bold headline promising the best sleep of my life once I wear this product. I suggest each product have a riveting headline, hypnotic copy, and a call to buy now. Each product might have the equivalent of a mini-sales letter for it. The more you tell, the more you sell.

5. I like the copy at the actual product description.

It's descriptive and informative but way too short.

And you have to go into the site several levels to get there. I think a lot of this juicy copy should be on the home page. I'm betting the guy doesn't want to make a wordy home page, but that's a mistake. When people get to your page, they will only poke around for seconds before clicking away. More copy there -- more hypnotic copy -- could create more buyers.

6. There are other things this site could do, of course. They might add an audio greeting.

Or a pop-up offering a discount. Or an exit pop-up to be sure to get someone to sign up for their newsletter. Or maybe pictures, such as ones of happy people enjoying the products.

7. Finally, I don't see any testimonials, or a guarantee. Both are *essential.*

Last week the owners of the site, Trent and Sarah Noah, sent me samples of their stuff.

I am impressed. Their hand-made and hand-crafted aromatherapy goodies are worth getting. So give them some business.
