CASE STUDY: Movies are being marketed with great passion these days, and the results are stunning. What can you learn from them?

There's Mel Gibson's masterpiece. His mega marketing campaign got 200,000 churches promoting his movie before it was ever released. It's always good to get your fan base to become cheerleaders for your work.

And Michael Moore's documentary has broken all records for a film of its type. He's a savvy marketer, but his fans moved the movie into nationwide access. Again, please a niche and that niche can make you rich. But Moore also tied into current events, which is a tried and true marketing technique.

And recently the buzz is around for an oddly titled film, "What the Bleep Do We Know?" Word of mouth is spreading the news of it across the planet. This mind-stretching movie about quantum physics and the nature of your reality begs to be watched twice, just so you can begin to understand it. (And if you've seen it and think you understand it, then you clearly don't understand it.)

The site at http://www.WhatTheBleep.com reveals a little of how the makers are marketing their movie. Basically, they're inviting you to be a grassroots team and go out and tell the world. It must be working, because that's how *I* heard of the movie.

Marketing lessons are everywhere. The idea is, please a niche and they'll make you rich. In fact, they may even join your cause and promote the product or service for you. It all begins with pleasing them, delighting them, and even amazing them.

But the real secret is to move them emotionally. All of the above movies are emotionally moving. Touch this button in people and you will awaken them. From there, they may help you in your marketing.

Please don't dismiss this secret. It is the tool of the greatest persuaders of all time. Use it ethically and wisely.

INSPIRING: I'm in awe of the good things many people are doing in the world. I read C.K. Prahalad's book, "The Fortune At The Bottom Of The Pyramid," and loved the true stories of companies helping the poor in places like Brazil and India. For example --

Aravind Eye Hospital in India grew from an 11-bed facility to the largest eye care facility in the world. They see over 1.4 million patients and perform over 200,000 sight-restoring surgeries each year. Two-thirds of its patients are served at no cost- and those who pay, pay an average of just $75. The hospital was modeled on the management style of McDonald's -- only it gives fast care for low (or no) money.

Casas Bahia grew from one man selling blankets and bed linens door-to-door to the largest retail chain in Brazil. They sell electronics, appliances, and furniture. With its emphasis on serving the poor customer, its low prices, and credit determined by payment history rather than formal income -- 70 percent of Casas Bahia customers have no formal or consistent income -- Casas Bahia grosses over US $1 billion, and has invoked total loyalty in its customers.

Most of us don't think big enough. To help stretch your mind, read Prahalad's book mentioned above, and read "The Power of Impossible Thinking," by Yoram Wind and Colin Crook.

Wind and Crook explain that our mental models of the world are what stop us, or help us. Thinking there is no profit in helping the poor is a limited mental model. The people in Prahalad's book are not limited minded by any means.

I strongly suggest you get both books. I don't make a dime whether you do or not, but I feel certain we'll all be helping the planet if we read, absorb, and act on what we learn. You might even expand your mind enough to allow some dollars to come your way. See http://www.whartonsp.com
