CASE STUDY: I received an oversized envelope from BioTech Research one day. Since I know I can learn something from every piece of snail mail (or email) I get, I opened it. I was delighted to see the name Benjamin Suarez on it.

Suarez is an old-school direct marketer. He's known for long letters packed with facts. He wrote a great book years ago, called "Seven steps to Freedom." I'm a fan, a student, and a customer of his.

His current letter was for the ProZone, a new type of air purifier. While I admit I still don't understand how the device works, I was intrigued enough to order it.

Now here's the good part.

A few days after I ordered it, his office called me. A delightful woman, obviously reading a scripted sales presentation, invited me to order "up to 3" more units at a discounted price.

Normally I hang up on sales calls. But I'm learning that I can gain something from them, just as I can from email and snail mail, too. So I listened.

And I bought another unit.

I asked the saleswoman if people were buying a lot more units due to her calling. She excitedly said,"Oh yes! Some people who already ordered three units go ahead and order ANOTHER three more with our follow-up offer."

Then she added, "How many more do YOU want?"

I stuck with my one more unit, which was still a successful upsell.

Upselling is a brilliant way to capture more sales. The people buying from you already have their credit card out. They're already sold. They've already said yes. All you are doing now is offering something more while the getting/selling/serving is good.

How can you use this strategy?

Whenever someone buys from you, ask (essentially) "Do you want fries with that?"

If you're selling a lot of digital information, like I do, you can put your added offer on the final order page, or you can send a follow-up email after they buy.

HYPNOTIC:  The most hypnotic book I read last month was "The Spiritual Journey of Joseph L. Greenstein" by Ed Spielman.

It's the true story of the world's strongest man, called The Mighty Atom. I loved this adventure story. I read it to keep my inspiration high for my fitness goals, but I absorbed more about determination, the power of your word, and the thrill of doing what others declare is impossible. The book is packed with gems, nuggets, insights, and just fun, juicy stories, too.

Whenever I read something that captivates me, I stop and ask myself how that happened.

What did the author do to keep my interest?

Often it's a well crafted sentence.

Or interesting dialogue.

Or a story well told.

I suggest you go through this same process whenever you look up from reading something and suddenly realize an hour passed.

You were reading Hypnotic Writing.

Go back and read it again, this time asking yourself "Why is this writing so good?"

Spielman's book, to me, is hypnotic. It's written by the creator of the original 'Kung Fu' TV series, which may account for it's brisk style and deep messages.
