Years ago I asked Rhonda Byrne — the woman behind the Law of Attraction hit movie The Secret — an important question.

We were having dinner in Maui when I asked, “How did you come up with the idea for the movie?”

She thought for a long time before answering, “I called it forth.”

“I called it forth” could mean a lot of things. But the other day I came across a quote from film maker David Lynch that made it all come together:

“Ideas are floating like fish. Desire for an idea is like a bait on a hook.”

It made sense to me because this is how I’m creating music. Songs are floating around in the ethereal world. My desire for a song attracts one to me. The more precise I am in my request for a particular kind of song, the more accurate the match will be.

This doesn’t mean I’m in charge of the songs. I’m a receiver for them. Music is still the boss. Songs are still in charge. I get to tinker with the idea after it arrives, but the idea itself comes by grace.

But I attract it by desiring it.

For example, one year or so ago, when I had my training wheels on as a songwriter and was experimenting with writing songs for the first time, I remember thinking, “I want to write a song about being kind to others.”

That might sound simplistic to you. But even way back in the mid 1990s, in my first book on Internet marketing, called CyberWriting, I suggested we learn to write in kindness as a way to keep peace online. This “kindness theme” has been with me for decades, as a kind of prime directive in my life and work, so it shouldn’t surprise you that I wanted to express it in a song.

But how?

I remember sitting on my deck outside my office, looking at the trees, and desiring a song about this message. As I meditated, one started to come to me. I jotted down what I was receiving. I played with it. I picked up a guitar and added some chords to it. The end result is the powerful stand-out song called “Everybody’s Goin’ Thru Somethin'” on my first singer-songwriter album, Strut!

In short, I attracted the song by my desire for the song.

I do the same thing for this blog. I often have no idea at all what to write about, but my desire for a fresh blog post “calls forth” the idea I need.

News Flash: Strut! is now available for you to order. You can hear excerpts from my healing music albums at  Strut! and Blue Healer.

For example, I didn’t know I was going to write this very post on how to attract great ideas. All I had was a desire for a post, which is what started the process to “call forth” an idea.

I then stumbled across the David Lynch quote while reading a magazine. Once I saw it, something clicked in me. I then recalled my dinner with Rhonda, and the post began to come together. I then sat down and wrote this for you.

But it all began with my desire for an idea.

Rhonda called forth her idea for a film about the Law of Attraction. She had a desire to share her insight, and that desire “called forth” a means. The result was a movie of historic importance.

You can do this, too.

What do you want to create?

A movie? A song? A business? A solution?

It doesn’t matter.

The first step is to declare your intention. Complete the sentence, “I intend to….” with whatever it is you want to attract.

“I intend to…create a website that brings in more sales.”

“I intend to…write a song about the theme of divine love.”

“I intend to…attract unexpected income by Friday.”

“I intend to…attract a loving person to date.”

My suggestions are loose as I’m making them up, but yours can be specific.

After that, allow ideas to come to you. Make space for them. Go for a walk. Relax in the hot tub. Sit in quiet meditation. Read a novel. Have a cup of tea.

Declaring your intention is the request that “calls forth” an idea to fulfill it. Making time to receive ideas is how you open yourself to hear the answer to your intention. Of course, after that, you need to take action on the idea to bring it into reality.

This process works for me.

It clearly works for Rhonda Byrne.

It will work for you, as well.

You just have to do it.

What would you like to “call forth” next?

Ao Akua,

joe

Hey Joe, another great blog. I really like the idea of calling forth. Great info to start the new year. By the way, you liked my Dirty Dogs Pet Services fb. I almost fell off my chair when I saw that.
Thank you for all your help and inspiration.

Happy New Year Joe! It’s “fate” that I see this post now. I should be going to sleep to rest for work in 4 hours time but I had to tell you my related experience. The other day I asked for my billion dollar idea. I am already in the process of setting up other million dollar businesses but I required a billion dollar idea (Requiring the billion dollar idea makes the million dollar idea look easier). Three days later (2 days ago) I received both my billion dollar idea and my philanthropic legacy vision. The philanthropic idea was one a psychic friend told me I would do but at the time I dismissed it in search of a million dollar idea. Isn’t this fun!? And easy!?

    Joe,

Thanks for the lesson on “desire” and the process of “calling forth”. I love the David Lynch quote.

I like the analogy Dr. Joe. It is so true and yes manifesting really does work this way.

I would like to call forth a few thousand buyers for my latest eBook. 🙂

There are plenty of ideas floating in the ether.
These is also a song by Stephen Foster from 1863.
It’s called: “There are plenty of fish in the sea, but, oh, they’re hard to be caught.”
    Great song.
He was one of the greatest musicians of all time.

I’m thinking Joe Vitale as my neighbour where he lives to watch whales off his lanai all winter. I wave to him a few acres away as I can hear the strum of his guitar, the snap of a zippo and the smell of bold cigar whipping by. as the sun sets the cooler breeze comes down from the mountain and the sky turns from pink to purple. a whale breeches 3 miles out and plume of white atomizes the air. a dog barks in the distance and the lights from silent specs of cars start to appear below on the coastal road. Olowalu Joe. Its got cowboy written all over it. See you there. Blessings for your Aloha, and Inspiration. Your echo off of the Divine source energy is felt universally. Fly me to Texas for a weekend, lets make some photos.

This was a great post Dr. Vitale. I am going to share it on my facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/successwithl.o.a. so more people can see it. It is so simple and well written and to the point. I know people will enjoy it as much as I did. Thank you and have a great week.

    Hello,
I have been reading this website for days and just ordered two books, Zero Limits and The Awakening Course from the library. I have been doing the hooponopono prayer.
I am recently homeless, now living in a very difficult rented room with bugs and hostile people.
I am getting all the help I can from the state and am barely surviving. I have not been able to find a job but am looking constantly. I have read over and over that you can have what you want as long as you do not need it. I am cold, lonely, and worried about running out of money for food.
My question, especially since Joe Vitale was homeless himself, is how can I possibly not feel need?
    Thank you

    • January 14, 2012 at 9:10 am

Nancy, I feel for you and am sending love. You are right that not feeling need is the challenge. The issue is to find what you are grateful for right now and focus on that. The more you do, the more you can relax and see your options. I wish you well. Godspeed.

I am grateful for your response. I am also grateful for the library.
        Thank you,

An idea came to me as I read your post, Joe. Ideas are in the ether. I just have to call them forth. I had been the type to start and stop ideas. Only lately here have I taken control of that. I still get lots of ideas, but I bring myself back around to just the one and even clarifying that more.

Well, the idea is certainly not a new one, but it has come as a revelation to me right now. One desire at a time. See it fulfilled then move on to a new desire. I’ll go do that now. Thank you.

“The first step is to declare your intention. Complete the sentence, “I intend to….” with whatever it is you want to attract.”
Around 2008 you differentiated between Divine & Ego intentions, stating that we should aim for the Divine ones.
“I intend to..” has the “I” upfront big time, doesn’t it?
    What happened to the Divine?
    We forgot it?

    • January 14, 2012 at 9:07 am

Divine and Ego intentions will always have the same letter “I” upfront, but the spiritual I will be different from the ego I.

    Thanks for the response.
Just to have a clarifying example….
“I intend to…attract unexpected income by Friday.”
How would you know if this is an ego or a divine “want”?
How come this is not emphasized if it is so important?

    • January 14, 2012 at 6:28 pm

Your point is correct. I’ve addressed it many times before. You can’t know what my motivating intention is, nor can I yours. Actually, it’s emphasized so much in my recent writing, speaking and recording, I’m a little surprised I need to do it again. See my book, The Awakening Course. See previous blog posts. Maybe start here: http://blog.mrfire.com/?s=inspired+intentions

    Hi Joe,

Enjoyed the post very much. My wife turned me on to your books and tapes a few months ago. I’ve enjoyed them very much and have seen a lot of personal growth since reading “The Attractor Factor” and listening to “The Key.” I’ve declared my intention, am clearing whenever necessary — which is quite a bit — and on Thursday night took inspired action after feeling what you call “an inspired nudge.” In the past three days my wife and I have started working with a friend who is an author, plan to publish his book and built a website and created a video trailer for his book. I believe 2012 will be a special year for us and I thank you for giving me the nudge to take action.

    Continued success to you.

    Mr. Vitale,
I watched the movie “the Secret” referred to me by my friend, Russ Horn. While watching that film I kept thinking to myself, I need to write for his next movie. I am a musician/composer and the story of this blog is right on the spot.

I’ve written since I was 8 years old as a way to escape from a terrible life in an orphanage, When writing, the ugliness disappeared and beauty filled my heart. For the most part now, I don’t call upon a song,….the songs find me. I am listening for them all the time and they come. But yes, there are times when I am asked to write for someone when I do need to call for a song and I do precisely what you do. It made the hairs on my neck stand up. Then I remembered how I told myself, I will write a piece for his next movie.

Ironically and admittedly, I have not followed you on the net nor anywhere else. I ordered a book, I forget the title, and today I received a phone call from the “Prosper Program.” After talking for awhile and thinking whether I should join or not, I asked them to call me back. I had to look you up!!! I had no memory of you. But I have MS so that’s not unusual for me. To my delight, I found that you were in the film that I bought “The Secret.” and then it all came together.

It wasn’t a lightbulb that went off in my head, it was more like lightning flashing across the skyline of my beleagured life. Of course I signed up.

It’s 3:55 a.m. here and I was writing music when I decided to take a break and look you up some more and came upon this blog. I write a blog as well about being enabled by my disability of MS but I also belong to Indaba Music as a member.

I am delighted to meet you and be forewarned, we will meet again and we will collaborate on some music. I am music, I am a song, I am a person who found where I belong.

Here is a link to some of my music if you care to listen:

Thank you for writing about a subject that i find difficult to explain to others. They say “ok sit down and write a song.” I listen for a minute and yes, call a song forth, and play it on piano as though I’ve played it for a llifetime. “How do you do that.” I’m asked. I shrug my shoulders. You answered it for me.

    Hi Joe!

Maybe this is out of place, but when I am reading about creating and manifesting, it makes me think of hypnotherapist dr Michael Newtons books “Journey of Souls” and “Destiny of Souls”. In his stories of people who in deep hypnosis tells about their life between lives, one can learn about how old and advanced souls are learning how to use energy to create environments and living things: First they visualize what they want and then they ad proper quality of energy in right composition . . .

If we, between our lives on earth and other planets, are such advanced creators – then it must be in our capability to create (in smaller scale) here on earth. The book “Destiny of Souls” is of especially interest here. In chapter 8 one can learn about The Advancing Soul and Specializations, such as Masters of Design . . .

Right now I am reading your interesting new book “Instant Manifestation” and I have just ordered the book you recommended: “The Science Behind the Secret: Decoding the Law of Attractiont” by Travis Taylor.

I have been applying the law of attraction for about 6 months now. I’m watching the movie “the secret” every weekend.. I got the salary increment I have been waiting for but I’m still struggling to make both ends meet. I’m still overwhelmed with debts. I have no idea where am I lacking. Maybe I’m lacking focus, or maybe I need more time to meditate. I hope the next time I post a comment, I would have something inspiring to share
