Non-Guru Tony Robbins

Three times.

That’s how many times I’ve watched the Netflix documentary, Tony Robbins: I Am Not Your Guru, which was released on July 15, only days ago.

I’m in the movie The Secret and I haven’t watched that film three times in ten years.

Watch Tony Robbins Film

Watch spellbinding Tony Robbins Film

So why am I so captivated with this film about Tony?

It’s raw but real.

Hard-hitting but healing.

Profane but profound.

I found myself crying throughout it.

I found myself having internal breakthroughs just watching it.

I found myself relating to Tony’s inspired approach to change.

The film captures Tony’s closed-door week-long event called Date with Destiny.

In some ways the event reminded me of the old Werner Erhard est program, and to today’s Landmark Forum.

This film puts you in Tony’s secret space, much like Luke Rhinehart’s The Book of est puts you in an est event.

In both cases, you can safely observe the sometimes rollicking emotions people experience.

And in both cases, you can experience transformation just by going for the ride.

All you have to do is pay attention and feel.

Oh, there are holes in the movie.

Tony says change happens in a moment.

Yet later in the film, when he’s asked how he changed, he says there was no one moment.

Tony comes across as the trigger for change and not any method or principle.

Yet if Tony is needed for change, then methods don’t exist; there is no method. It’s him.

But I’m not a critic of the film; I’m a fan.

That’s why I’ve seen it three times – so far.

I let any holes or inconsistencies slide by as I focus on the good in the movie, the breakthroughs, the insights, the energy, the sharing – all of which act as a catalyst to awaken viewers who aren’t even physically in the seminar room with the giant king gorilla.

This makes the film itself a tool for transformation.

Documentary filmmaker Michael Moore told Joe Berlinger (the director of this film on Tony), “I believe it will actually save lives.”

I believe it, too.

A few more reasons why I love the film –

Tony goes past the little problems people offer and goes deeper, to the operating system under what they present.

When a 19 year old says her problem is her diet, Tony digs deeper to discover her issue is with her father, not her diet.

The movie helps prove why we all need coaching; without a trained person’s objective feedback, we will continue to blame our problems on others or on little things and entirely miss the big hidden operating system below our conscious awareness.

And I love statements such as, “You know what your biggest problem is? Thinking you shouldn’t have any.”

Tony goes on to explain that problems are gifts.

I don’t know Tony personally — we spoke at the same event in Chicago years ago, but hours apart, so we have yet to meet* — and I get nothing for endorsing this film from him or the director or anyone else.

But I urge you to watch it and let it stir your soul.

Expect Miracles.

PS – My own television show, all fourteen episodes, is edited and in the hands of Amazon. Stay tuned for details. Meanwhile, go watch the film about Tony Robbins: I Am Not Your Guru. It’s stirring, soulful and spellbinding.

Hey Dr. Joe thanks for the post. You are so right Tony himself, his work and the new movie are sooooo powerful. Many years ago I had the privilege to train as a Tony Robbins Results Oriented Coach – the training was in depth and life changing – I love that his work is now on Netflix and I too am watching it again and again – the only thing better
Is actually going on that seminar called Date with Destiny

Joe, thank you for the heads up about this movie coming out. I watched it right away and was instantly hooked. I absolutely love it and can’t stop thinking about it. I’m getting ready to watch it for a second time so that Shannon can see it. And I’ve been recommending it to everyone I see…

    Thanks again 🙂

I have followed Tony for 25 years. I am glad that by watching the film, I may get transformed, too, as you assured us. You gave a good, unbiased review. Thank-you.

I have watched it twice already and will do it again.
I experienced 10 breakthroughs of my own during the first viewing.
Tony continues to amaze me, although I first started listening to his tapes 25 years ago…

Well said. I never saw that discrepancy in the movie, I gather I was crying too hard. Very compelling movie. I truly do believe change can happen in a moment. Like you always say expect miracles. And I do and they have happened to me personally. Raw, Soul-wrenching movie for sure, something put in my path for a purpose. Life is a journey filled with all types of experiences, some good, some not so good; it is how we reframe it all and continue to keep moving forward. Thank you for a great recap on the movie and thanks again for pointing me in that direction coach. :).

Hi Joe. Great review here. Its funny that I watched the secret several times right before I watched “not your guru”.I was equally stirred by the raw emotion that permeated the room and by the very direct way in whcih Tony would attempt to help people. Ive been a major fan of Tony but I never got to see a date with destiny seminar whcih was impressive. I was even more impacted by the secret. You were one of the few that really stood out amougst the rest, although they were all excellent. I ve also watched the guru a few times and will go back to it again.

Hello Joe, can I make a question?

Why are you leaving the Marketing-Guru field?

I am asking this because – so far I searched – You are the best Mentor on Marketing I’ve found. Because you show Enthusiasm on what You teach, and You have a Human touch, You not only teach “cerebral/logic” stuff on Marketing (beside of many other “Mentors” that are excessively cerebral or Logic).

But I have to confess…Some books of yours are very self-promotional, but that’s Ok. You have so very good Books on Marketing, very educational to a guy like me who is Graphic Designer and didn’t had any Education in Marketing, can apply it. In fact Design and Marketing are a little bit opposite in some aspects.

    Best Regards,
    Miguel B – Portugal.

Excellent review. I have also watched the film 3 times. This is a really empowering film. I laughed, I cried and I had some breakthroughs too.
Now I am excitedly waiting to view your show! Joe, you are a very inspiring writer and speaker. I had never heard of you until I watched The Secret about 4 months ago. I found the websites from every person interviewed and was amazed at the information and tools available. Your programs really resonated with me though and I find myself listening to your programs on Audible daily. I have purchased 4 of your programs so far. Each one is filled with such advice and ideas that anyone can use to improve their life. Thanks for inspiring me to dare something worthy!!!
