Best Books of 2013

I read a lot. I devour books, old and new, and eagerly hunt for more. I visit Amazon daily and buy almost as often. I’m on a relentless quest to learn, grow and evolve. That said, what were the best books I read or reread in 2013? Here’s the answer:

Total Recall by Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Arnold’s book is riveting. I read it every night for a week, taking that long to relish every one of its 600+ pages. Not only is the man’s life fascinating and fantastic, but his life lessons are not to be missed. Love him or hate him, he has clearly lived a full life and has much hard earned wisdom to share. I loved this book so much I bought it in hardcover, paperback, Kindle, and even a leather bound, boxed, autographed edition. Read it.

Beyond Cynical by Dr. Loretta Breuning.

Actually, Dr. Breuning wrote three books that are all terrific and all on my “Best Books” list. They influenced my view of the world and myself. Beyond Cynical was the first I read, but I, Mammal and Meet Your Happy Chemicals are equally great. These books reveal that we have a core operating system in our brains not unlike a monkey’s. We are basically animals with wallets and purses. We are unknowingly driven by chemicals spurting in our brains, all designed to insure reproduction and survival. No wonder we do such odd things. I’ve been telling everyone to read at least one of Dr. Breuning’s books. I long to see new books from her, hopefully released early in 2014. True wisdom here. She’s my new guru.

How to Get People to Do Stuff by Susan Weinschenk

I love the brilliant books of Dr. Weinschenk. I interviewed her years ago due to her book, Neuro Web Design. This new book reveals 140 strategies for influencing people, including yourself. It’s fascinating to learn what makes us tick, and how we can be persuaded. I’m sure you want people to do something positive (buy your product or service, clean their room, stop smoking, lose weight, etc), so this book is a gem. Easy to read, too. If I were you, I’d grab all of her books, such as 100 Things Every Presenter Needs to Know. Very practical and breezy reading.

My Life and Work by Henry Ford.

Yes, I know this book came out in 1922, but I read it in 2013 and was inspired by Ford’s focus on serving people, employing people, and making a difference in the world. I also know his personal views of aspects of society were appalling, but I learned much about business from this autobiography, written with Samuel Crowther. He had a mind that thought in terms of service and systems, with money as a reward for good deeds, and for that, this book is well worth reading today.

Man On Wire by Philippe Petit.

Good Lord, this book caused me to hold my breath for what seemed like hours at a time. It’s the exhilarating true story of a man obsessed with walking a tight rope between the World Trade Center’s twin towers in 1974. It took him six years to plan and pull it off, and once he was (illegally) high in the air, he walked his tight rope between the towers for a full hour. Think of that! His writing style is also engagingly different, which makes this breathtaking book even more fun to read. I loved it.

Improv Wisdom by Patricia Ryan Madson

I first read this gem years ago but I have to put it on the list as I reread it and revisit it regularly and consider it devotional literature. It’s about trusting yourself and life. It’s a brief but deeply stirring read. I find it inspiring. I interviewed the author and found her as sweet as chocolate.

Transformation by Bill Phillips

One of the great joys of my life is knowing Bill Phillips. He influenced me with his Body-for-Life contests ten years ago, and he’s doing it again this year with his Transformation Camp. I interviewed Bill this year, have had a few lunches with him, worked out with him, had him speak at my recent event, and know he’s the real deal. His book is wise, and includes processes on forgiveness and more. It’s certainly not just about right eating and exercise. It’s a manual for living a healthy life.  It’s a masterpiece.

Money Rules by Jean Chatzky.

I’ve read this little book’s 94 principles, revealing “The Simple Path to Lifelong Security,” several times since I picked it up at an airport. The author is apparently a hotshot on NBC and a contributor to Newsweek, but I didn’t know all that when I bought her book. Anything that can help us be aware of our relationship to money, and how others (including ourselves) lead us into parting with it, is worth the price of admission. A great companion to my own book, Attract Money Now.

Rick Rubin In the Studio by Jake Brown.

I’ll be creating my seventh album (seventh!) in late January, so I want to keep learning all I can about doing my best in the studio. Rick Rubin is the acknowledged genius at producing music that sells and lasts. This insightful volume of articles gives clues to how Rubin operates. The stories about him recording legends such as Johnny Cash, Neil Diamond, Tom Petty, Dixie Chicks, and so many more, are educational and inspiring.

The Book of est by Luke Rhinehart.

I’ve read this book numerous times over the last few decades, but am putting it on the 2013 best books list because it is a classic. Every time I read it, I learn something new about myself, other people, or just how to write a hypnotic book. If you haven’t read it, do yourself a favor and do so today. Just click right here.

There you go.

Let me know what you read in 2013 that moved you in some way, too.

Transformation Part Three

I wrote about fitness legend Bill Phillips (of Body-for-Life fame) and his new Transformation Camp Challenge on March 1st. I gave you an update on my progress with his program on May 18th. Today I want to share my current news because I just received my second medal from Bill, for completing his Transformation Camp 12-week challenge a second time.

Won 2nd Medal!

Won 2nd Medal!

Since February I’ve released 37 pounds of extra weight and added 12 pounds of solid muscle. Photos of my inflated biceps after an upper body workout are pretty impressive. I’m no match for my friend Lou Ferrigno but I’m turning myself on with my progress. I have Popeye arms. I feel like a Hercules in training.

There’s nothing like feeling strong and healthy to make you willing and able to take on challenges and wrestle to the ground any encounters. I’ve also noticed that the healthier you are, the more your income increases.

Part of this is due to the higher self-esteem you get when you are fit. A lot of it also comes from the reality that you have the energy to work and get projects done. I’m no slouch at productivity, but with all this extra energy, watch my smoke!

My 21-yr-old nephew and my 60-yr-old biceps

I fully endorse Bill Phillips and his program, and I’ve had to tweak it to get results for me. Since so many people are into health, fitness, weight loss and longevity, I thought I would share some of my insights with you here.

Here they are:

  • Whey wrong. Whey is a milk product and can clog my lungs in one day. Not everyone has a reaction to whey, but it’d be smart to see if you are sensitive to it. Bill advised me to switch my whey-based meal replacement shakes to Egg Beaters, which caused a profound change in my results. It’s an old school, “Rocky’” approach. Instead of drinking raw eggs, like Stallone did in the movie, I have a cup of Egg Beaters with two ice cubes and Strongevity (see #2 next). I add coconut water (not coconut milk) to get potassium. Tastes great.
  • Strongevity rules. I used to swallow a bucket of supplements every morning.  I tossed them all out and now only use Strongevity. Strongevity is a new product that Bill created, based on his intense research into what works. There’s a combination of ingredients in this new formula that creates a wondrous effect. Bill suggested I take it right after my workout, and right before bed. After a few months, I added a mid-day serving. Not only do I feel stronger and more vibrant, but my barber said my hair color was coming back. (Maybe hair will be next.) Read about Strongevity here: http://billphillipsnews.com/2013/07/01/did-you-read-the-exciting-news-about-strongevity-rx/
  • I love this!
  • Workouts work. Again, I follow Bill’s routine. I do high intensity interval training, with my pulse being my guide. I want to hit 160 for at least ten seconds, back off a bit, and hit it again, doing this five times within 25 minutes. I do upper body strength training once a week, lower body once a week, and 25-minute “cycle” cardio three times a week. Two days off. This system makes me feel like Superman, though I admit the workouts exhaust me. I drag around for two hours after them. Hey, I’m 60. Read about the Bill Phillips workout here: http://billphillipsnews.com/2013/06/05/this-is-the-exact-workout-i-did-today/
  • Bill Phillips reviewing my lab work
  • Nutrition secrets. This is a huge topic. In short, unless you know what foods you are sensitive to, not just allergic to, you could eat healthy foods and still get sick. (Blueberries, generally considered a true health food, were bad for me at one point.) My wife Nerissa specializes in this area and has a site at www.foodpowers.com I also found that food combining, better understood as food separating, speeds up weight loss. My trainer Scott York taught me this. It’s a system developed by Dr. Hay in the early 1900s. Basically, you eat proteins alone, and carbs alone. When you mix them in a meal, your body has a tougher time digesting them.
  • Mindset. Unless you have a mental template of what you want to look like, your mind will use your default template, which is probably going to be your current overweight image. I once had a photographer photo shop my face on a swimmer’s toned body. Recently I had an artist sketch a vision of me as fit and trim. Both give my mind a new vision of what to achieve.

Again, the above are my tweaks for my body. I strongly encourage you to contact Bill Phillips and get started with his tested path. From there, you can fine tune your eating and exercising to fit your own lifestyle.

As I’ve written here before, I fully endorse Bill Phillips. I am not an affiliate for anything he offers (he doesn’t know I’m writing this) but I fully recommend all of it. I’ll be attending his Transformation Camp again January 3-5, to kick-off my third 12-week challenge with him. Joe

All You Need

This folk wisdom from Alex Haley reveals a secret to success in life —

“Anytime you see a turtle on top of a fence post, you know he had some help.”

This is relevant because I just finished the long awaited sequel to the bestselling book Zero Limits and was reminded of something along the lines of the turtle observation. It’s about how to motivate yourself and those around you.

My new book is titled At Zero: The Quest for Miracles through Ho’oponopono. It picks up where the first book stops, and is pretty gripping in what it reveals.

The long awaited sequel to "Zero Limits"

The long awaited sequel to the bestseller "Zero Limits"

In it I tell the story of how ho’oponopono began (it wasn’t all love and light), and I share personal stories of my own dark nights (it’s not all bunny rabbits bringing me coffee every morning).

I also share a deeper understanding of what Dr. Hew Len taught, I give a great deal of fascinating information about Morrnah Simeona (the actual creator of authentic ho’oponopono), and I share some deeper secrets behind this mystical Hawaiian healing method – many revealed for the first time anywhere.

You’ll find the book hypnotic, deep, and unforgettable. The book, and its cover, are designed to be “cleaning” tools that work on you as you hold it and read it. And you can have a copy of it before anyone else by attending this event —

The book will be published in January 2014. Audio versions will come out next year. But anyone who attends my Attract Money Now LIVE event in November will be the first in the world to receive a copy. (See PS below)

Meanwhile, I wanted to share an insight about that turtle mentioned above.

A decade or more ago, I was in the home of Jerry and Esther Hicks, of Abraham fame. I helped them with their promotion in the early days, wrote the foreword to one of their books, created a full page national ad for them, reviewed their first books, and more. I love them both (and miss Jerry).

At their home I noticed a framed quote on a table. It was, as I recall, from the TV show, The Virginian.  In essence, it said that a man was able to accomplish more by having someone who believed in him more than he believed in himself.

It struck me as odd at the time. I was reading and teaching about “do it yourself” concepts. I was yet to learn about the power of having someone believe in you as a way to generate more results.

Of course, this is a key secret of coaching.

Besides accountability and instruction, with a coach you have someone who believes in you.

That is powerful beyond measure.

I have done my best to encourage and believe in every single person I’ve ever met who shared a goal with me, even if only for a few minutes over coffee.

At this point in my sixty years, it’s hard to count how many people have gone on to create results where none existed before. I’m not taking credit for their results. They had to do the work.

I’m pleased that I could add a little fire of encouragement to them, so they could pursue their dream.

It wasn’t hard, and it didn’t take long.

But this isn’t about me.

It’s about you.

I’m urging you to encourage others.

You have no idea what potential is in the people around you.

For example, I worked for a giant oil company back in the early 1980s in Houston. I was writing and teaching and pursuing my career as a writer, but my “day job” was as a geological technician. I was there until about 1984. I then left (read laid off), and struggled my way into success.

When the movie The Secret came out in 2006, many long lost friends saw me in the film, Googled my name, and reconnected with me.

One man who had been a supervisor at the oil company wrote to me and said, “I wish I knew then what a gem I had around me in the office.”

That was flattering, but it made me realize that everyone around you is a gem. You may not know their skill set, but if you encourage them, it could come to light.

One of my favorite childhood actors was Clint Walker, who played Cheyenne in the hit TV show of the same name.

Clint Walker and Steve Reeves

Clint Walker and Steve Reeves

Clint is alive and well at 86 years old.  A few years ago, he gave a presentation. At the end of it, after he received his standing ovation, he thanked everyone in the room for being an inspiration in their lives to others.

You didn’t have to have a hit TV show to be an inspiration, Clint explained. You could encourage others right where you lived, by what you said, and what you did.

I was reminded of all this while writing the sequel to Zero Limits, because along the way, a relative criticized my music. It gave me an opportunity to do some extra cleaning, ho’oponopono style, and it led to an important insight.

I was told by my peers early on to “gird your loins” when I started recording my own songs, as everyone has an opinion about singer-songwriters. Some people don’t like the Beatles. (Gasp). Some people won’t like me. (Faint.)

When my relative criticized me, I realized that what I — and everyone – want, is encouragement.

The world is full of negativity, bitterness, and ego.

What we long for is sunshine, in word and deed.

Triggered by my experience, I started a new song that basically says, “You can achieve any dream, all you really need, is someone who believes, in you.”

I was just in New York City, for a private master mind with a small group of powerhouse Internet marketers. The photographer there, Donato DiCamillo,  had a rough childhood growing up on the streets of Brooklyn. But he said something unusual happened that helped him make better choices as he grew up.

With photographer Donato DiCamillo

In NYC with photographer Donato DiCamillo

As Donato hung out on street corners, consorting with the wrong crowd, a local business man would drive by, honk his horn, roll down his window and tell him, “You’re better than that, kid!”

Donato told me that this happened repeatedly for years.

He kept hearing, “You’re better than that, kid!”

He didn’t know the man in the car.

He didn’t know why the man focused on him.

He found out later that the man was a local businessman, fairly successful, and a little eccentric.

Donato went on to tell me that because he heard “You’re better than that, kid!” over and over again, the statement lodged itself in his brain. Today, of course, he’s not on the streets, and was hired to be the official photographer for our private mastermind.

All because someone believed in him.

Here’s one final example —

When I attended my first Bill Phillips Fitness Transformation Camp last February, I saw Bill do something unforgettable.

He walked around the room, looked each person in the eye, and said, “I believe in you. You can do this.”

It was very powerful.

Bill Phillips and Sclott York believing in me helps me to transform my body into health and fitness

Bill Phillips and trainer Scott York believing in me helps me transform my body into fitness

Bill’s belief in me caused me to stay focused, work his 12-week program, and get terrific results.

At the end, I received a medal from him, saying I am a winner.

You can imagine how good that felt.

My reminder to you is to encourage others.

Be a coach.

Be a cheerleader.

Be a good friend.

“All you need, is someone to believe, and I believe in you.”

If a turtle can be picked up, and elevated to higher ground, so can you.

You can be The Turtle Whisperer. 🙂

You can look for inspiration, and encouragement.

It’s available.

But meanwhile, be an inspiration to others.

By the way, I believe in you.

Go for your dreams.

Ao Akua,

Joe

What If You're Broke?

“I want to attend your event but I’m broke”

Some people say they can’t afford the Attract Money Now Live event I’m hosting in November in Austin, Texas because they don’t have the money.

http://www.AttractMoneyNowLive.com

If you feel that way, please continue reading.

I’ll be blunt –

The truth is, everybody has money. You have money, too. You may not have as much as you would like right now, but you have *some* money.

Fintess Legend Bill Phillips Will Be At My Event

Fitness Legend Bill Phillips Will Be At My November Event in Austin Texas

The thing is, you’re choosing to spend your money in ways that may or may not be helping you attract more money.

You know what I’m talking about.

I’m asking you to take a cold, hard look at your relationship with money.

Are you leveraging it to attract more money?

Probably not.

Most people spend their money to survive, not to grow and prosper.

And that’s why they struggle.

Famous Actress and Healer Dee Wallace Will Also Present

Famous Actress ("E.T.") and Healer Dee Wallace Will Also Present

I learned a long time ago that one of the best ways to attract more money is to invest your existing funds in ways to bring in even more funds.

This isn’t as hard as it may sound.

I’m talking about changing your mindset.

I’m talking about investing in you.

For example, if you could invest $595 and instantly get $12,000 in value, wouldn’t it be smart to do so?

Of course it would.

When you register for the Attract Money Now Live event, you are instantly given access to online videos worth $12,000 that will begin to transform your consciousness around money.

The videos are called Awakened Millionaire Secrets, and they will stir your mind into expanded thinking that you probably can’t even imagine right now.

http://www.AttractMoneyNowLive.com

I know you may feel broke right now, but I also know if you make a daring decision, you could change your life — and your bank account — forever.

Plus the speakers at my event are off-the-charts incredible.

I’m talking about a fitness legend, a famous movie star, and others — including me — who will be there to transform you at the core so you can have, do, or be whatever you can imagine.

Get full details about the event and the speakers and the “$12,000 for $595” offer at http://www.AttractMoneyNowLive.com
